Slate Archives of Lviv Region was established in December 1939 as a subdivision of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in place of the former Polish State Archives of the city of Lviv, where at that time a small quantity of the funds of local Austrian-Hungarian and Polish administrative institutions were kept. The branch of State Archives of Lviv Region was established in the town of Sambir on the basis of Drohobych Region State Archives in 1959. Due to liquidation of the branch in 1977 all its funds were transferred to Lviv and placed in depositories of SALR.

Most of the funds of State Archives of Lviv Region are preserved in the depositories of former Roman-Catholic Church of the Dominicans - a monument of architecture of the 17th century. In 1991 all archive records of the party committees and organizations of Lviv Regional Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine together with premises of the premises of former party archives.

SALR carries organizational-methodological and scientific supervision of the work of 20 archives departments of district state administrations and 8 archives of the towns of Lviv region. The archives employs 74 professional archivists of high qualification, public servants, managers, technical and auxiliary workers.

At present State Archives of Lviv Region is one of the largest depositories of written sources in Europe. Total length of its shelves attains more than 34 kilometers. 5087 archive funds of the establishments, enterprises, organizations and individual persons contain almost 2.5 million files starting from the end of the 17th century to the present day. They include nearly 42 thousand photographic, 1577 cinematic, 555 audio documents. Scientific-reference library contains almost 67 thousand books and booklets, including also incunabula.
